By now, I think we all recognize that the new millennium heralds a reality characterized by unprecedented levels of accountability and awareness. Individuals, institutions, cultures, religions, and nations are being asked to look within and re-invent. The ante on the truth of our values, our choices, and our actions has been escalated exponentially.
Depending on one's alignment with this new reality, it's either a frightening time or an exciting time. At Future Medicine Now, we are excited, amazed, and happy to report that we are continually outcreated by the promise of this opportunity.
Institutions which have steadfastly avoided the obvious need for fresh thinking and more enlightened goals are already being forced to wonder, "What's going on here?" Health care is a perfect example. What passes for health care in this country will be severely brought to task in this century.
Given the depth of entrenched investments of both power and wealth, coupled with the accelerating decline of America's health, it's unlikely that health care as we know it can survive beyond the next two or three decades. This stagnant paradigm simply hasn't the capacity to survive the weight of its own karma. Reinvention doesn't look promising. And if you're waiting for government to save us, dream on.
We believe that our malfunctioning “health care” system can best be replaced by intelligent and compassionate innovation and entirely new perspectives in three key areas. Without satisfactory answers to these three questions, in this sequential order, our efforts will lead us to more of the same: tinkertoy medicine, greed, and bankruptcy — in finance, quality of life, and spirit.
It should be self-evident that the third key (the only one of the three currently in discussion in this country) is completely irrelevant until the first two are fully understood.
In our experience, the two primary keys already exist in a practical and accessible form. The definition and the principles have been present for thousands of years, easily discernible and intact in a proven, coherent, and self-contained paradigm. Education and willingness are all that are required to access them. Both are absent from our culture, and that's why these choices are now before us.
Following our discussion of the first two requisites, we present the initial stage of our concept for the final component: "How do we pay for the care we innately know is possible — but which increasingly eludes us?"
