Greetings from Future Medicine Now!
Coaching is in these days. There are coaches for sports, of course. But there are also personal coaches, business coaches, life coaches, coaching coaches, and, yes, health coaches. There’s a coach for everyone, and everyone is getting a coach.
This is not new. People have always sought guidance from those well polished in a given discipline. The reason I’m giving attention to this phenomenon is because it’s becoming big business. And when money is involved… well, we want to be paying attention. The mind loves the promise of someone with all the answers. In fact, it can even be a little desperate. So exercise caution when embracing the coaching boom. There is potential for great benefit. There is also potential for… illusion.
Like everyone else, I have my two cents to share, and it amounts to this: If you’re going to invest in a coach of any kind, look for one with the broadest and highest perspective possible. As my spiritual “coach” reminds us, we can only go as high as the level at which our coach resides. And there are a lot of levels of awareness, some obvious, some not so obvious.
If I were seeking a health coach, I’d start by looking for someone rooted in a system of medicine that is all encompassing — a coherent worldview which engenders the “big picture.” And I’d want to know that my potential coach embodied this worldview in daily life. Then, of course, it would be helpful if he/she had a passion for sharing this worldview for the benefit of others.
For me, each visit with a client is an opportunity to share the broadest, most comprehensive worldview of health I know — that of Oriental Medicine — in a personally meaningful way. To me, this is one of the primary functions of a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. And FutureMedicineNow.com is oriented toward imparting that wisdom, as well.
Clients who find themselves far away when they need guidance take advantage of phone consultations. I mention this for the benefit of those who may not have considered the advantages of phone or email contact when a personal visit to the office is not possible due to
Much can be accomplished in a focused, fifteen minute phone session. And, if needed, regular phone appointments may be scheduled to facilitate the accomplishment of a specific health goal.
Just a reminder that our first cooking workshop is coming up on March 31st, and there are still a couple of places left for this informative and fun-filled morning of adventures in food. I hope to see you here!
Despite recent suggestions to the contrary, winter is still very much with us, so we have added a couple of delightfully warming recipes for those of you looking for new experiences with food. Check out “Huevos Internacional” and a unique kichadi favorite here.
The lengthening of daylight hours is speeding up rapidly. Before the month is over, we’ll be screaming through the Spring Equinox (March 20 at 8:07 p.m. EDT) and rushing headlong into the yang-dominant half of the year.
Be aware that we’re moving into a season in which the liver is susceptible to the negative influences of wind and speed. This means that the liver is not well adapted to the speeding up of its microcosmic world, especially after a winter of rich foods and relatively sedentary lifestyle. It also means, stay out of the wind. Time to stay centered and relaxed.
This is an ideal time, too, for a cleansing program for that sluggish liver. Maybe time for a tune-up, as well.
Much Love,
Dr. Larry Horton
